Nature of Achilles Tendon Repair
Achilles tendon repair is a surgical treatment aimed at restoring the function of a torn or ruptured Achilles tendon. The tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone and plays a crucial role in walking, running, and jumping. When it’s torn, movement becomes severely limited. The procedure involves stitching the torn ends of the tendon back together or, in severe cases, reinforcing the tendon using nearby tissue.
Common causes of Achilles tendon injuries
Achilles tendon injuries typically occur due to repeated strain or sudden trauma, including:
Sports-related stress: High-impact activities such as running or jumping place excessive strain on the tendon.
Sudden movements: Abrupt acceleration or direction changes can cause partial or complete tendon tears.
Lack of flexibility or strength: Weak calf muscles or poor conditioning can increase vulnerability to injury.
Age-related degeneration: The tendon becomes less elastic over time, making it more prone to damage.
Previous tendon problems: A history of tendinitis or incomplete healing increases the risk of rupture.
Diagnosis for Achilles tendon repair
Diagnosis begins with a clinical evaluation to assess symptoms such as sudden pain, swelling, and difficulty walking or standing on tiptoes. In many cases, patients report a “pop” sound at the time of injury.
A physical exam includes checking for gaps in the tendon and reduced foot strength. Imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI are used to confirm the extent of the damage. Surgical repair is typically recommended if the rupture is complete or if the patient leads an active lifestyle and non-surgical recovery poses limitations.

Treatment overview
Achilles tendon injuries account for 20% of all large tendon injuries. Complete rupture is often preceded by periods of Achilles tendonitis.
Whilst some patients try a conservative approach to manage this injury, surgery is a solution for others. If you have tried conservative treatments for several months, with no/minimal results, or if you have a significant rupture, surgery may be the solution.
At MSK Doctors, we use the STARR technique for Achilles tendon repair. STARR is an innovative approach to ligament repair that aims to preserve natural tissue by repairing, regenerating and reinforcing the ligament. This helps maintain the natural biomechanics of the ankle. Our doctors will reinforce the ligament with a biocompatible scaffold, to increase its stability.

Frequently asked questions
How long will recovery take?
Most patients will be able to walk immediately after our Achilles tendon procedure. Then, full return to sports usually happens 3-6 months later.
How does your Achilles repair treatment differ from traditional surgery?
Our procedure is minimally invasive, using small needle puncture as opposed to an open incision. This speeds up recovery time as there is minimal scarring. It also offers better cosmetic outcomes.
Our STARR technique also offers faster recovery, with immediate weight-bearing and return to normal activity within 3-6 months. In contrast, traditional surgery involves a non-weight-bearing period of 4-6 months, with full recovery 6-12 months after surgery.
